Citing significant budget cuts as legislators approved California’s state budget, the San Francisco Superior Court announced that 200 employees would be laid off as of September 30, 2011. In addition, 25 of the court’s 63 courtrooms will be closed in an effort to overcome a $13.75 million deficit for the fiscal year. The layoffs represent a 40 percent reduction in staffing levels.
While the civil division will be the most substantially impacted, reduced numbers of bailiffs, clerks and reporters will affect all courts. According to a news release issued by the court, obtaining criminal and civil records could take months.
Turnaround times may increase for cases where records must be requested through the Office of the Clerk for review by our team of researchers. Any background screenings that do not require an additional level of research should not be affected.
Corporate Screening will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as additional details become available. We will do everything possible to minimize delays while providing comprehensive criminal records searches.
