On Monday, April 1, as part of its approved budget, New York state lawmakers voted to increase its Office of Court Administration (OCA) search fee. Upon Governor Andrew Cuomo’s approval—which was signed on April 12—the rate has increased 50%, approximately $30 per search.
The purpose of this increase, as stated in the legislation, is to fund indigent defense programs in New York state. Those programs assist county governments and legal services providers in providing the “effective assistance of counsel to those legally entitled to counsel but cannot afford to hire an attorney.”
The only increases customers will see are relative to the adjustments determined from the state. We recognize this is a drastic increase and are working with the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) to advocate for an alternative.
We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as the state of New York adjusts pricing based on circumstances beyond our control. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your Corporate Screening account manager. This updated pricing went into effect on April 13, 2019.
